Neti Pots

Nasal irrigation is an ancient Ayurvedic technique known as Jala neti, which literally means nasal cleansing in Sanskrit.

Jala neti, though relatively less known in Western culture, is a common practice in parts of India and other areas in South East Asia, performed as routinely as brushing one's teeth using a toothbrush. It is performed daily, usually as the first thing in the morning with other cleansing practices. It may also be performed at the end of the day if one works or lives in a dusty or polluted environment. When dealing with problems of congestion it can be performed up to four times a day.

Benefits

The saline solution irrigation and nasal flush promotes good nasal health. It can be used by patients with chronic sinusitis including symptoms of facial pain, headache, halitosis, cough, anterior rhinorrhea (watery discharge). Nasal irrigation is reputed to help prevent colds and otherwise promote good nasal health by cleaning out the nasal passages and helps alleviate stuffiness, dryness, nosebleeds and the symptoms of allergies.

For those who suffer from chronic sinusitis, nasal irrigation is a quick and inexpensive way to promote ciliary function and mucus turnover, decrease edema, and improve drainage through the sinus ostia. In serious cases of sinusitis a naturopathic doctor may suggest using probiotics or other substances instead of salt.

Here's How:

1. Fill the neti pot with water. The water should be lukewarm (not too hot, not too cold) and can be poured into the pot directly from the tap (approximately 1/2 cup of water). Distilled water is recommended if the purity/safety of the tap water in your region is questionable.
2. Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt or table salt (without added iodine) to the water. Stir with spoon to dissolve thoroughly.
3. Lean your head forward over the basin, bending your neck down slightly with your eyes looking downwards.
4. Gently place the spout of the neti pot inside your right nostril, forming a seal to avoid any outer leakage.
5. Open your mouth slightly. Breathe continuously through your open mouth during this sinus cleansing procedure. This allows a necessary air passageway so that the water will not drain from behind your nose into your mouth.
6. Tilt your head sideways, so that your right nostril is directly above your left nostril. Tip the neti pot, allowing the water solution to pour into your right nostril. Within a few seconds the water will naturally drain from your left nostril into the sink.
7. After the net pot is empty, remove the spout from your right nostril, and exhale through both nostrils. Gently blow your nose into a tissue.
8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 for your left nostril.

Tips:

1. Thoroughly clean your Neti Pot after each use. Periodically place it in your dishwasher for a thorough sanitizing. Same as a toothbrush do not share your neti pot with anyone else. Everyone in the household should have their own neti pot.
2. Your may wish to use only half the amount of recommended salt the first few times you use your neti pot until you become more accustomed to the process.
3. Applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the inside of both nostrils before the treatment helps sooth sensitive skin.
4. You may notice improved breathing, smell and taste.
5. If you experience any discomfort please discontinue using your neti pot and consult your doctor or other health care provider.

AHCC

Active Hexose Correlated Compound

Immunity is the key to health. Our immune system protects us from countless pathogens on a daily basis. It is also responsible for the destruction of abnormal cells, cells that do not grow and differentiate normally – cancerous cells. Despite having allocated considerable efforts and resources to the treatment of cancer, it remains an ever-growing problem. Worldwide incidence is rising rapidly as the search for new innovative treatments expands. One promising avenue lies in immunotherapies, therapies that allow a more efficient immune response in an attempt to target specific diseases such as cancer. Medicinal mushrooms have long been used for their immune-enhancing properties. An oligosaccharide called active hexose correlated compound (AHCC), extracted from a class of higher fungi, particularly stands out. AHCC is exceptional because of its capacity for positively modifying the immune response. Indeed, AHCC increases the release of interleukin-12 (IL-12) and interferon-gamma (INF-y) by immune cells. IL-12 and INF-y are both important immune messengers. Immune messengers are very precise and they activate the compounds of the immune system that are best suited to eliminate a specific pathogen. In the case of IL-12 and INF-y, they allow enhanced immune control in instances of cancer, AIDS, hepatitis and infections.

AHCC has been shown effective in the management of cancer by itself and with chemotherapy and/or radiation. It improves outcomes in cancer patients, allows immuno-competence (chemotherapy and radiation weaken the immune system) and reduce the side effects associated with radiation and chemo. Trials have also shown that AHCC is very helpful in cases of infection, hepatitis and AIDS. AHCC is a potent adaptogen helpful in stress management and shows promise as a glucoregulator.

AHCC has the incredible ability to stimulate our defense system. It is a safe and effective treatment for cancers, AIDS and infections and it offers protection from toxic substances such as chemotherapeutics. It is an important tool in the fight against cancer and is less expensive and better tolerated than more conventional treatments.

Adaptogens are substances that increase the body’s ability to dynamically shift gears when new demands are placed on us. Adaptogens, then, are quite distinct from substances that address some specific threat to the body, such as chelating agents to deal with heavy metals, antioxidants to quench free radicals, or antidotes to biological poisons. Instead, adaptogens activate whole-body, nonspecific defenses, redirecting the body’s resources to provide energy for active engagement with all of life’s battles, from fighting saber-toothed tigers, to handling long hours at work, to finding your way through grief and emotional chaos. Adaptogens must also be distinguished from substances like stimulants or steroids, which force the body down a rigidly defined metabolic path: instead, adaptogens work to enhance homeostasis, the ability of the body to adjust responsively to changes in the external environment in a way that maintains an ideal internal environment.

Rhodiola

Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola, also known as “Arctic Root” or “Roseroot”, is authentic Russian Rhodiola rosea, an herb with a long history of use as an adaptogen and sexual tonic in the traditional medicine of Iceland, Norway, the Carpathian Mountains of the Ukraine, and above all in Siberia, for adaptation to the rigors of life on the tundras of North-central Asia. Dioscorides, the father of medical botany, provides the earliest documented medicinal use of this botanical in De Materia Medica, a phytomedicinal text which formed the basis of Western pharmaceutical and herbal writing for the next 1500 years. In more recent times, Rhodiola preparations have been listed in the national pharmacopoeias of France, Sweden, Denmark, and the former USSR, as an adaptogen and “brain tonic”. In the nations of the former Soviet Union, Rhodiola is traditionally prepared in the form of a tincture called “nastojka”, decocted from fresh Rhodiola roots by soaking the roots in 40% alcohol for one week.

Rigorous testing of Rhodiola’s adaptogenic properties in the former Soviet Union began in the mid-60s, and has continued to this day. Four decades of animal studies and controlled clinical trials in humans clearly demonstrates that Rhodiola extract is a true adaptogenic botanical.

As a classic adaptogen, Rhodiola extracts both steel the organism against the eventuality of stressors, and prevent an overshoot into burnout when those stressors are endured. This can be seen in the botanical’s simultaneous bolstering of the baseline levels of adaptive neurotransmitters and hormones typically increased in response to adaptation to the rigors of endurance training, and prevention of over activation of those same pathways when the organism is in a stressful environment. As another example of the adaptive, balancing effect of Rhodiola, the key component salidroside has been found to prevent excessive blood sugar levels after an injection of adrenaline (which normally causes the body to pump out more glucose) and to prevent blood sugar levels from falling too low after an injection of insulin.

Again, Soviet scientists discovered a generation ago that Rhodiola allows experimental animals to use their body’s glycogen energy reserves more sparingly under forced exercise, and to replenish those reserves (and reserves of the crucial high-energy compound creatine phosphate) more quickly afterwards. These properties doubtless contribute to Rhodiola’s ability to extend animals’ endurance during forced swimming or clinging to a rod to avoid falling. To make sure that Rhodiola’s effects on physical performance was an adaptogenic effect, and not caused by flooding the body with steroids, scientists looked for the kind of hyper-masculinization you see in steroid freaks at the gym: no such signs were found.

Accordingly, Rhodiola extracts improve the organism’s capacity to stand up against a wide variety of stressors, including heat shock, heavy metal exposure, free radical assault, high altitude, terpentine, liver-damaging doses of adriamycin, and exhaustive exercise. Another example is Rhodiola’s ability to protect the heart from stress. When lab animals are subjected to extreme cold or to massive doses of the stress hormone adrenaline, the regular, controlled beating of their heart is disrupted and the oxygen supply is temporarily cut off. But Rhodiola supplements prevent arrhythmia, reduce the damage to the muscle cells of the heart, and balance the overflow of stress neurotransmitters normally associated with these stressors.
